The Charism Group are pleased to be able to present this year’s symposia events for schools. We will focus on some formation for Governors in our schools following this request via feedback form participants and last year’s symposia.

All sessions will have a slightly different focus from an exploration of Charism and how it guides our schools through to practices and decision making by governors and ensuring they see the Charism or Mission of their schools as a priority.

We encourage all schools to urge governor participation in this series where they will be able to meet other governors and really explore the touchstone of Charism.
In recent years, a number of individual orders have found the responsibilities of educational trusteeship increasingly difficult to carry. By adopting a collaborative approach to trusteeship, the Gaudete Trust offers Religious Orders an alternative way of continuing to serve Catholic education.
The Trust will be a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) recognised by the Charities Commission and a Public Juridic Person recognised by the Church.
The Gaudete Trust springs from ROE’s mission to “celebrate and build on a rich heritage of Religious Orders in education.”
The Trust will build bridges of collaboration through partnerships and networking so that the Church’s mission can be strengthened and sustained for the future in Catholic education.
Why the name Gaudete?Our name – Gaudete – was chosen after much reflection. This collaborative trust is a new venture for Religious Orders in England and Wales so we wanted a name that makes people stop and think about its meaning.
It is a name that tells us to rejoice! We rejoice in the Good News of the Gospel. We rejoice in the Holy Spirit who is enabling us to create something new and is teaching us what true collaboration means. We rejoice in the rich heritage of Religious Orders in education.
But most of all we rejoice in our young people for whom this trust is built and we want them, as we say in our vision of education, to be able to rejoice in the person they are and so achieve the fulness of life of which Jesus spoke.

A group of ROE members are reviewing the CES proposed model Articles of Association for Catholic academies in RO trusteeship. We are surfacing a number of inconsistencies and queries.

On 22 June the ROE Charism Group held the third in a series of 3 symposia for senior leaders in Religious Order schools. This last session was themed ‘Charism: A Way of Living’ and explored with over 60 staff from many of our schools, how Charism is embedded into the everyday life of the school. With video contributions from headteachers, governors, chaplains, pastoral and teaching staff as well as from former and current pupils, a great overview was explored of the practices, policies and environment we shape in our schools that ensure that the order’s mission is truly understood and lived by the whole community.
Considering the time of year (just after TAGs were submitted) and the stresses of COVID-19 we were delighted by the energy and enthusiasm of the participants whose feedback can be seen on our Padlet resource page that accompanies this session:

Save the date! On 3 November, the Charism group will be offering a workshop for all governors, old and new, whatever status of governor, in our religious order schools. As the decisions that are made by governors dictate much of what happens in schools, it is vital that every member of a governing body in a religious order school grasps the particular nature of its charism and the influence that the vision and values must have on those decisions.
