Charism Group - Roe UK

We are a group of 12 people, 7 Religious and 5 lay people, working with and committed to sustaining the charism of our own Religious Orders and to working collaboratively with other such like-minded and passionate people.

Our work is part of ROE’s mission to “celebrate(s) and build(s) on a rich heritage of religious orders in education” and support “Religious Orders in the articulation, development and transmission of their particular charisms.”

Our aims are:

to explore what Religious Orders could share with each other
to share resources and ideas which enable our schools to be alive with the distinctive Charism of their founder in 21st Century
to discover the specific needs of the schools
to respond to these needs

Since our collaborative work began, we have:

Delivered a series of three very successful and well-attended leadership symposia on exploring charism. These took place throughout the academic year 2020-21 and were targeted towards headteachers and senior leaders in our Catholic religious order schools. The symposia adopted a reflective approach combined with practical examples of how Charism underpins all we are and do in our Catholic schools. Contributors included current and former students, governors, curriculum leaders, chaplains and pastoral leaders.
Following the success of the leadership symposia, the next academic year saw us respond to the need to examine the Governance of our schools through the lens of charism. Through 3 online sessions we looked at how Governors are guided by charism, the spiritualty of governance and how governors can best ensure that charism is lived out in our schools.
Our third year’s collaborative work was focused on Chaplaincy in our Religious Order schools. We have supported our Chaplains and Chaplaincy teams in several ways; through our regular termly ‘Chaplaincy Chats’ – online meetings to support and nurture those involved in delivering Chaplaincy. We also held our ROE Chaplains’ Conference in London in summer 2023. The conference was well attended and extremely well-received by staff from many Religious Order schools. We explored the role of Chaplaincy, our responsibilities in terms of RE inspection and how Chaplaincy is lived by the whole school community. Going into our academic year 20-23-4 our Chaplaincy Chats will continue on Nov. 8, Feb. 28 and May 8 and we will be leading a session for Headteachers on spiritual leadership to follow up on our previous work with them.
